Magic books for children

Do you remember the magic of children's books? They have talking animals and plants, little princes, wizards and monsters. Rediscover them to be reminded that 'all grown-ups were once children'. And to discover the spirituality concealed in the stories.

'Sometimes, I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast,' says Alice as she begins her adventures in Wonderland.

Then we encounter Peter Pan telling us, 'the moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it'. And Winnie the Pooh's advise, 'Promise me you'll remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think.'

We set out flying on the wings of imagination. We discover that 'happiness doesn't lie in the objects we gather around us. To find it, all we need to do is to open our eyes.' When we try, we realise that 'one must look with the heart'.

We discern that to see with the heart, we have to be kind - 'that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted'. And once that happens, you see and hear better. You understand that that it makes no sense as the Little Prince points out to 'grow five thousand roses in one garden and yet not find what we are looking for' - for what we are 'looking for can be found in one single rose'. As Hobbit says, 'If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.'

Profound words conveying the very essence of spirituality. When will we adults learn?
