Indian cricketer scored 59 hundreds in his career – so he donated Rs.59 lakh to the fight against Covid-19!
As the novel Coronavirus has finally dealt its blow in India, many iconic figures from the country’s cricket fraternity has come forward with handsome monetary aid to join in hands to fight against the pandemic. A donation of Rs 59 lakh has come from former legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar. But why this strange amount instead of a round figure? Clarification comes from his son Rohan, who reveals that it signifies the 59 centuries Sunil has scored in his decorated cricketing career.
The news of Gavaskar’s donation came from former Mumbai cricket team star Amol Muzumdar. The 45 year old made a post on his official Twitter handle, revealing the generous deed done by Sunny with the caption: “Just heard that SMG has donated 59 lakhs towards covid relief fund. 35 to @PMCaresFunds n 24 lakhs to @CMOMaharashtra superb gesture Sir @rohangava9 @JayeshKulkarnee @Cricrajeshpk @BCCI @ClaytonMurzello”
The peculiar numbers actually signifies the number of centuries Gavaskar has scored during his career, as it was revealed by Rohan Gavaskar in the comments: “This was done last week. 35 because he scored 35 hundreds for India and 24 because he scored 24 for Mumbai. Prayers for everyone’s good health and that we are all safe and sound.”
In his 16 year long international career with Team India, Sunny scored 35 Test centuries in 125 appearances. His 24 domestic centuries came during his spell with Mumbai, back then known as Bombay cricket team. Both of them add up as 59 Test centuries in his career, signifying the Rs 59 lakh donation he made towards the fight against the virus outbreak.
Rohan, on the other hand, couldn’t follow his father’s footsteps, as his international experience with India remained at only 11 ODI appearances, his last being against Pakistan at the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy.
However, the 44 year old former middle order batsman has enjoyed 13 years with Bengal cricket team, and also joined Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League in 2009.
The COVID-19 outbreak has seen 5,194 confirmed positive cases in India, along with 149 deaths. The country is currently under a 21-day lockdown, proposed by PM Narendra Modi which is currently in effect till 14th April.
