Schmeichel's brutality towards Gary Neville as the Manchester United legend rolls back the years

Gary Neville, the legendary rough and tough Manchester United right back and the self righteous Sky Sports pundit we all love and respect. But did you know the player was once overwhelmed by the roughness of another fellow Red Devil? Yes, and its none other than the one and only Peter Schmeichel.

Neville, the United youth academy graduate was drafted into the senior team in 1992, just a year after Schmeichel switched sides from his national side Brøndby IF. Although the two became very well teammates under Sir Alex, there was one incident that Neville remembers very stoutly about the Danish goalkeeper.

“When I first got into the first team at 18/19, Peter Schmeichel, I’ve said it before, quite often was brutal with me”- the 44 year old worded in his memories with his teammate in the latest episode of the famous 90s footballing nostalgia podcast Quickly Kevin, will he score?

“Now, I speak to him and we laugh about it, but he brutally was, yeah. He didn’t fancy me as a player that much. Peter Schmeichel was the goalkeeper and that back four of Bruce, Pallister, Parker and Irwin was legendary.” he added.

“He used to do this crossing practice after the game and he used to stand on the penalty spot and catch it and say, ‘That’s s**t.’ He regularly just did that and he was actually just being really tough and horrible with me.” the pundit described the post match drill the former Denmark international would put him through.

The two remained comrades until Schmeichel joined La Liga side Sporting CP in 1999.
