Luke Newton on Bridgerton's FRIENDS connectionIn an interview with Bustle, Newton revealed that Colin and Penelope had a friends-to-lovers arc from the past two seasons. And now finally in Season 3, it's their time. That's why their romance reminded him of the beloved sitcom, FRIENDS. He said, "We always reference how Colin and Pen are like Ross and Rachel [from Friends], because it never works out at the right time. They keep just missing each other. It’s so fun to play the different versions, of when someone is ready to commit and the other isn’t."

The actor also added that their characters' beautiful love story was developed over the last four years since the show debuted on Netflix in 2020. He said the time allowed him and Coughlan to prepare and perform for their romance in the third season.
