Doctors say that children aged seven to 11 who had persistently bad dreams were almost twice as likely to suffer from cognitive impairment by the age of 50. The effect is pretty much the same in middle-aged and older adults.
  • Inability to catch lies or sarcasm: Are you constantly confused when someone is being sarcastic with you or is lying to you? Doctors say that this could be due to a heightened risk of dementia. According to a 2011 study by experts from the University of California, people suffering from Alzheimer’s or frontotemporal dementia (FTD) found it harder to detect sarcasm.
  • Money mishaps: If you are constantly facing money mishaps, losing cash and find it difficult to man your wallet, it could be due to dementia or a risk of the same at a later stage in life.
  • Eating mouldy food: People suffering from dementia are quite likely to rely on mouldy, old and stale food. As the condition progresses, it can progress for one to rely on items that are not food at all.
  • Less fluency: Some people might lose fluency with their native language, vocabulary and grammar and might even struggle to find the right words. Deterioration in language is more rapid with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Blank stares: Another early symptom of dementia could be people giving blank stares – some forms of the condition might even impact the ability of the eyes to keep track. Some people with the condition might even miss the key elements as the brain fails to put the picture in the right way.
