Greater Chennai Corporation to repair 3,500 roads before monsoon; 25 per cent work already completed

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has said that 3,500 roads, including 1,380 roads dug up by Metrowater and 500 by Tangedco, will be repaired in the following two weeks. According to officials, 25% of the work has been finished, 50% of the remaining work is in progress, and tenders will be requested for the other 25%.

Any department working on city roads typically pays a road-cut repair cost to the company, which uses the money to restore the road once the work is over. When construction is underway, the business utilises its emergency money to patch roads and spread gravel over potholes to level them, preventing accidents and clogging up traffic.

According to V Rama Rao, who spoke to TOI, the 6th Main Road between Puzhuthivakkam (zone 14) and Nanganallur has been in poor condition for the past two years. "Similarly, MacMillan Colony Road has not been relaid for six years. Two culverts are used are being used as speed breakers which are causing accidents. This is due to the delayed Metrowater underground sewerage project," he said.

A local named V Nagraj said to TOI that Metrowater is working on underground sewerage projects in eight sites, including Manapakkam, where several traffic jams were caused by CMRL construction that also blocked roads in other areas. According to him, "Metrowater and the corporation have dug up roads but have not levelled the ground or repaired them to the fullest extent possible, let alone relayed them. In fact, work on some stretches is still ongoing, and every rain spell has made the roads difficult to commute to. "
