Gulshan Devaiah On Why He 'Stopped Making Clothes': I Had To Because... | Exclusive

Gulshan Devaiah is a man of many moods. The actor can effortlessly slip into any character, and for the last couple of years has been regaling audiences with innumerable acts both in films and on OTT. Having started his career from the Anurag Kashyap's feature film That Girl in Yellow Boots, alongside Kalki Koechlin and Naseeruddin Shah in 2010, he has donned varid roles in films Shaitan, Hate Story and Hunterrr as well as on OTT in shows Dahaad as well as Guns & Gulaabs.

What not many know, however, is that Gulshan was a terrific fashion designer as well. So why the change?

In an exclusive interaction with Zoom, Gulshan revealed, “I was always fascinated by cinema. I really wanted to be a film actor.” The noted actor went on to add, “I had to retire myself from fashion. I was actually good at it. But I really had to pull myself out of it as I wanted to have a tunnel vision in my journey in cinema. I stopped making clothes.”

Gulshan confessed he does “miss it sometimes” and he “enjoyed it”. But expressed, “I had to do it (move from fashion to films) because it was my childhood dream.”

Gulshan Devaiah has charted a journey of over a decade in the industry where none of his two roles are remotely similar. The actor stated matter-of-factly, “I need variety. I get bored by doing the same thing.”

According to the actor sometimes people come up to him and offer him a role which they say is perfect for him: “But I am not interested in it,” he reflected. “It does not fascinate me. It is fun to pretend to be other people, or be someone who you are not.”

The actor gave the example of the 2018 film Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, where he played Karate Mani. Not knowing Karate, he said, "How do I best give the impression in the limited time? That is what makes the whole process fascinating. And that is a lot of imagination. Most of my work is a lot of imagination,” he said.

According to Gulshan, while choosing which is his favourite act till date is different, he does have a favourable inclination towards one. “I like all of the acts I did. But the toughest one was Ghost Stories... Physically, mentally it was brutal. Seven days of shoot and I was exhausted,” he signed off.
