Manchester United confirm Cristiano Ronaldo will leave club after bombshell interview

The Cristiano Ronaldo-Manchester United story is over. Ronaldo's tenure as a Red Devil has come to an end after the 20-time English champions confirmed that the two parties have parted company with each other with mutual agreement.

The decision comes on the back of a bombshell interview by Ronaldo last week that saw the 5-time Ballon D'or winner sensationally criticise the club, the owners, and coach Erik Ten Hag.

Ronaldo had re-signed for the Manchester-based outfit last season in an emotional reunion after a three-year stint with Juventus.

The Portuguese footballing superstar is currently in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup where his team will begin their campaign against Ghana on Thursday (November 24).

In the official statement put out by United, the club stated the decision was a mutual one while thanking Ronaldo for his service over two stints. The statement importantly did mention that the club's focus remains on continuing to progress under coach Ten Hag.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future," said the statement.

"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch," they added.

Before his second stint with the club, Ronaldo had spent six years at the club from 2003 to 2009 in which he progressed from a youngster to a Ballon D'or winner. He won three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008 with the Red Devils.

In his interview with Piers Morgan that came out last week, Ronaldo accused the club of 'betrayal' and claimed he does not respect Ten Hag while stating the Glazer family doesn't care about the club. x

Ronaldo is now a free agent and can sign for any club in January on his own will.
