Teachers Meet DU VC to Raise Concern About CUET, Outline Difficulties Faced By Students

New Delhi: A group of teachers recently met with Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh to discuss the challenges faced by students as a result of the Common University Entrance Test, CUET. They sought an investigation into the matter, as well as the impact of the paper on the "social profile" of classrooms

The teachers, including members of the academic council, outlined various concerns such as significant increase in admissions of students from the upper-middle economic class due to the CUET.

They claimed that this trend is a consequence of students from working-class and lower-middle-class backgrounds being unable to afford expensive coaching for the test.

Teachers noted that some students who are preparing for other entrance exams seek admission to Delhi University as a safety net. However, this often leads to a lack of commitment to classes and exams, resulting in wasted seats that could have been given to other deserving students.

“As a result, they do not take the classes and even the exams seriously. This causes the loss of seat which would have been taken up by some other desirable student. This exclusion is further compounded by the fact that CUET is based only on the CBSE syllabus which is not followed by almost 80 per cent of schools in the country,” the note read.

Moreover, the CUET is conducted online even though both digital literacy and infrastructure are extremely limited in the country, the teachers said. They also raised the matter of abrupt timetables due to changes brought in after the implementation of the NEP 2020 and the FYUP.

“The extra 3 papers introduced have increased the burden on students as the total no. of papers stands at 7. The unhealthy class schedule of these papers has forced students to only attend classes while their learning of the core subjects has been compromised,” the teachers said in the note.
