Masked men pelt stones on INDIA supporter's showroom

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A day after a garment showroom and residence belonging to an INDIA bloc supporter was targeted by unidentified youths in Fazalpura area of the city, a representation of political workers demanded immediate identification and arrest of the accused on Tuesday.

The masked attackers allegedly pelted stones and broke the glasses of Zafar Ali Merchant’s showroom on Monday evening.

According to the FIR registered at the City Chowk police station, the accused were riding a bike without a number plate. They reached the store and demanded support for the ‘kite’ symbol (AIMIM). They warned they would torch Merchant’s home. Soon after the incident, police teams led by assistant commissioner of police Sampat Shinde rushed to the spot and examined the incident caught on CCTV cameras. MVA workers also reached the store and registered their protest against.

Merchant accused that sitting Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel’s supporters were behind the attack. However, AIMIM refrained from making any statement.

The businessman said that for over a month now, meetings to garner support for MVA/ INDIA bloc were being held at his residence. “Many sections of the society are not comfortable with the idea and are resorting to violent means to prevent us from supporting and working for the MVA candidate.”

On Tuesday, INDIA bloc members met commissioner of police Manoj Lohiya and demanded that the suspects be arrested in two days or else MVA would take to the streets against the violence.

A delegation led by Shiv Sena (UBT) office-bearer and former mayor Nandkumar Ghodele, Congress city president Yusuf Shaikh and paediatrician Shoeb Hashmi unanimously termed the incident as serious in nature and said they would take up the matter with the Election Commission of India.
