BJP goes ballistic, Congress files FIR over Ajmal jibe

Guwahati: Both the ruling BJP and oppostition Congress on Sunday came out all guns blazing against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal ’s statement to news agency ANI , whereby he advised Hindus to adopt the “Muslim formula” to marry early and produce many children to increase the population.

Ajmal, a Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri in Assam said this while responding to a media query in south Assam’s Karimganj district on Friday.

While BJP said the statement was a “strategic manoeuvre to protect vote bank of a particular religious group”, leader of opposition in Assam assembly and senior Congressman Debabrata Saikia on Sunday lodged an FIR in Simaluguri police station in Sivasagar district against Ajmal for his “communal, obscene and sexist remark”.

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has also filed at least 14 FIRs against Ajmal in different police stations across the state in the last couple of days. “Hate speeches can not be tolerated. But we are surprised why police are not taking any action?” asked AJP spokesperson Ziaur Rahman.
