'Broken from within': HP deputy CM's daughter breaks silence on refusal

Shimla : Himachal Pradesh deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri ’s daughter, Aastha, on Thursday broke her silence on why she had decided to refuse Congress’s offer to contest the Lok Sabha election against BJP’s Anurag Thakur from Hamirpur seat.

Aastha, who lost mother Simmi Agnihotri on Feb 9, said in video post on her Facebook account that she was still broken from within.

“There is no desire to go to Lok Sabha or assembly in this sad time. Above politics, countless memories of my mother have broken me from within. My father is also keeping a bold face, but I know the truth,” she said. She said this was the time to pay homage to her mother and not contest elections. “So, thanks to everyone for making the proposal,” she said. Putting all speculation on her contesting the election to rest, Aastha said she was looking for a way to live without her mother and struggling with her memories.

Aastha’s public statement came after it had emerged from the previous central election committee (CEC) of the Congress that the Hamirpur ticket had been offered to her, instead of former Una MLA Satpal Raizada. Hamirpur happens to be a stronghold of the BJP, with Union minister Anurag Thakur being elected from it since a byelection in 2008. He is contesting for a fifth term from the constituency.

Earlier, the name of chief minister Sukvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife, Kamlesh Thakur, was also doing the rounds for the Congress ticket, given the former’s clout among voters.
