Delhi government to honour Covid warriors at Independence Day function

NEW DELHI: During the Independence Day celebrations , Delhi government will honour Covid warriors of Delhi, like doctors, nurses, sanitation workers, plasma donors, ambulance drivers and police personnel who have played a key role in helping the society fight the pandemic.


This year the government will not organise any Independence Day function at Chhatrasal Stadium.

The venue will shift to Delhi Secretariat where CM Arvind Kejriwal will unfurl the national flag. In the past, the function was organised at Chhatrasal stadium with cultural functions .

CM will be the chief guest of the function where Covid warriors would be present besides other guests. “This time the special attraction will be the Covid warriors of Delhi and the government will honour them. One representative of the doctors, nurses, sanitation workers, plasma donors, ambulance drivers, police will be present,” said general administration department minister Gopal Rai .

Rai said keeping in mind the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been decided to cancel the mega cultural programme of the Independence Day celebration at Chhatrasal stadium and instead hold a small function at Delhi secretariat.

“The cultural program will not take place this year, but a very simple celebration will be held. Keeping in mind the social distancing norms the Delhi government will only invite around a hundred people in the function,” Rai said.

All Delhi cabinet ministers will be present in the function. All the 70 MLAs of Delhi will be present along with the seven Lok Sabha MPs and three Rajya Sabha MPs. The chief justice of Delhi high court will be invited besides bureaucrats and mayors of the three municipal corporations.
