Jain University women claim badminton title

Bengaluru: Tanya Hemanth and the doubles pair of Drithi Yatheesh and Trisha Hegde played stellar roles as Jain University blanked University of Delhi 2-0 to emerge champions for the fourth time at the all-India inter-university women’s badminton tournament at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara in Punjab recently.

Tanya defeated Deepshikha Singh 22-20, 21-19 in her singles match before Drithi and Trisha ousted Kavya and Kushi 21-18, 15-21, 21-11 to clinch the best-of-three tie.

Tanya, who had three game points at 20-17 in the first game, allowed Deepshikha to bounce back and draw level at 20-20 before winning the two crucial points to seal the issue. The second game was also close but the Bengaluru girl held her nerve to prevail 21-19. In the semifinals, Jain defeated Adamas University, Kolkata, while in the quarterfnals, they ousted Bihar University. Sixteen teams took part in the meet.

Results: Final: Jain University bt Delhi University 2-0 (Tanya Hemanth bt Deepshikha Singh 22-20, 21-18; Drithi / Trisha bt Kavya / Kushi 21-18, 15-21, 21-11. Semis: Jain bt Adamas University, Kolkata 2-0 (Tanya bt Utsava Palit 21-13, 21-15; Drithi / Trisha bt Taneesha / Shreya 20-22, 21-9, 21-13. Quarters: Jain bt Bihar University 2-0 (Tanya bt Akansha Pandey 21-10, 21-6; Drithi / Trisha bt Akansha / Saloni 21-12, 21-15).
