Maharashtra fisherman arrested by Pakistan dies in Karachi jail

MUMBAI: A fisherman from Dahanu, Vinod Kol (45), who had been imprisoned in a Karachi jail for 18 months for violating international maritime boundaries , reportedly passed away last month after a fall, reports Sandhya Nair. His death marks the first for an Indian fisherman in a Pakistan jail this year. His body will be sent to India on April 29.
Meanwhile, 35 Indian fishermen are expected to be released from Pakistan jail on April 30.

Kol worked on the 'Matsyaganda 9' boat with eight others. All nine were arrested by Pakistan Maritime Security Agency two days after they sailed from Okha port in Gujarat on Sept 25, 2022. Although Kol's jail term ended in Nov 2022, he remained behind bars. The body will be handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagah border .

Peace activist Jatin Desai said Kol reportedly had a fall in the jail on March 8 and was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in Karachi, where he died on March 17.
