Over 150 rubella cases in Maharashtra this year, officials say no surge

MUMBAI: Amid cases of measles, the state has detected more than 156 cases of rubella this year. State officials, however, said there was no surge or outbreak and the cases were consistent with detections made every year.

Dr Pradeep Awate, state surveillance officer, said suspected measles samples are being tested in various laboratories, including the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

"At the time of testing suspected measles samples, some are coming positive for rubella," he said, adding there is no rise or outbreak of rubella though. Most cases are sporadic and there is no clustering anywhere, he added.

In Mumbai, roughly a dozen cases of rubella have been detected this year. Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC's executive health officer, said the city records an average of 12-20 cases. "We have not noticed any unusual rise in rubella," she added.
