Over 500 cases of sunstroke recorded in Sambhajinagar amid soaring temp

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Over 500 people have so far suffered heatstroke owing to the scorching heat in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, officials said.

Health authorities, however, maintained that no severe cases have been reported thanks to the timely treatments provided at the 53 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) across the district.

“For the last one month, residents of the city and district have been enduring intense heatwave. Although, occasional unseasonal showers and cloudy weather have offered some respite, the mercury continued to soar, leading to a spike in heatstroke cases. More than 500 patients have sought treatment at the PHCs and fortunately, none of them were admitted to the hospital for over 24 hours,” an official from the district health department said.

The last week of March saw an increase in the heat intensity, but coolness in the air prevented any significant discomfort. However, from the first week of April, temperatures kept breaching the 40 degrees Celsius mark.

“Heatstroke is prevalent during April and May. Exposure to sun can lead to illness and not getting timely treatment can be fatal. The risk of death increases if medical help is not immediately available after a heatstroke,” the official said.

Considering the current weather conditions, the health department has established dedicated heatstroke wards in all the PHCs,

10 rural hospitals and sub-district hospitals. These wards are equipped with beds, cold water, fans, medicines, and other necessary materials required for treatment.

In April, out of the 30 days, temperatures reached between 40 degrees Celsius and 41 degrees Celsius on 10 occasions and even touched 42 degrees Celsius between the last three days of the month.

“Measures taken by the administration and health department have ensured the community remains safe despite these extreme conditions,” district collector Deelip Swami said.
