Rajasthan: Ashes turn into manure in this Bhilwara crematorium

JAIPUR: A crematorium in Bhilwara district has decided to turn ashes into manure instead of getting it immersed in rivers.

Panchmukhi Muktidham Vikas Samiti secretary Babulal Jaju said, “Over 550 cremations had taken place in this crematorium in the last two months. There were several families who did not turn up to collect the ashes while some of them took only a portion of it for religious purposes.

So we have decided to convert around 300 sacks of ashes collected at the crematorium into manure rather than disposing it in rivers."

Till now, the committee used to immerse these ashes in the Triveni river as the quantity was very less, however this time it is too much and would pollute the river.

He said the motto is “Nadhi bachao, khad banao.”

Jaaju, who is also an environmental activist, said immersing such a large quantity of ashes in the river will result into pollution. When asked about the reaction of relatives of the deceased, he said. “We reason with on the merit of the move. They accept it as they also understand the value of rivers and water in Rajasthan .”

He said even in non-Covid cases, most of the relatives take only a part of the ashes (asthi) and the remaining is left at the crematorium.

He said to convert the ashes into manure, they had tied up with a goshala in the area. The ashes are mixed with cow dung which is a good natural manure for crops used in the plantation in parks and other public places. “We are saving the river and promoting plantation while using the ashes in a much more productive and environmentally friendly way.”
