THANE: A murder convict who had jumped parole almost seven years ago was recently held by Thane police from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Friday.

The police had gone to UP to nab a theft accused when they got a tip-off about murder convict Sumit Giri (30), assistant commissioner of police NT Kadam told PTI.

"Giri had stabbed his girlfriend to death in a lodge in Rabale on Mar 20, 2008. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. In November, 2012, he jumped parole while serving his sentence in Kolhapur jail," Kadam said.

"We had gone to UP to nab a theft accused in a case registered at Narpoli police station in Bhiwandi. We got Giri following a tip-off. He has been handed over to Rabale police," Kadam said.
