Tipu Sultan name removed from Malad garden, says minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha

MUMBAI: Mumbai suburban district guardian minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha declared on Friday that the name of Tipu Sultan has been removed from a garden in Malad West.

The renovated garden was inaugurated by Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh last year, when the MVA alliance was ruling the state. Right wing members had protested against naming the garden after Tipu Sultan.

Lodha, while addressing the media on Friday, said, this is the land of Shivaji Maharaj, what role does Tipu Sultan have here.

Lodha said 10 days ago in the DPDC meeting, Mumbai North MP Gopal Shetty and all the MLAs demanded that the name be removed. In the meeting, I gave directions to the officials and they removed the name.

"The garden was never given this name, somebody just put up a banner with it. There is no mention of the name in government records. An agitation was carried out against it. Assigning a new name is under process, there aresuggestions to give the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar, Ashfaqulla Khan and Ram Prasad Bismil. Whatever it is, will be sent by the DPDC and the Collector. Thereafter, the government or the BMC would take a decision," Lodha said.
