City railway station placed 3rd in revenue generation

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Railway Junction has emerged as the third-highest revenue-generating station in the Southern Railway region, encompassing Tamil Nadu and Kerala. According to data provided by the Southern Railway, it recorded a revenue of ₹325 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal.

Chennai Central railway station holds the first position with ₹1,216 crore in revenue, followed by Chennai Egmore railway station with ₹564 crore.

Apart from Coimbatore, other major revenue-generating stations like Chennai, Trivandrum, Madurai, and Trichy serve as divisional headquarters in Southern Railway.

“Railways had decided to reconstitute the Pune division by adding 24 stations. A similar action must be taken in Coimbatore by including Kinathukkadavu, Pollachi, and Gomangalam railway stations in the Salem railway division. A headquarters for a railway division must be established in Coimbatore,” said J Sathish, joint secretary of the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC).

Despite being one of the top revenue contributors, there are more train maintenance facilities in Chennai, Trivandrum, and Madurai, while it’s insufficient in Coimbatore. “This facility will enable the starting of new train services. Many proposals to build additional train maintenance facilities in Coimbatore are pending with Southern Railway,” Sathish said.

Despite continuous demand, the restoration of overnight train services to Thoothukudi, Rameswaram, Sengottai, and Madurai via Palani is yet to commence. “Increasing the frequency of direct trains from Coimbatore to Delhi, Jabalpur, Dhanbad, and Tirunelveli should be considered. Introducing new train services to Patna, Kolkata, Bilaspur, and Chennai Egmore must be implemented,” said Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) member C Balasubramanian.

“If the demands are addressed fairly and transparently, Coimbatore could potentially generate an annual revenue of Rs 600 crore,” he said.
