MCG to install two units for leachate treatment by March

GURUGRAM: MCG will make two processing units to treat the leachate collected at Bandhwari operational by March 31. The processing units called the disk tube and reverse osmosis (DTRO) will have a capacity of 200 kilolitres per day (KLD) each and will be installed at sewage treatment plants (STPs).

The officials said the new DTROs will help treat leachate, especially in the rainy season.

“We will make all efforts to install the DTROs and make them operational by March 31 as directed by the NGT committee. The two DTROs will be installed at the STPs where space is available to erect the processing units,” said Naresh Kumar, the MCG joint commissioner (Swachh Bharat Mission).

MCG officials said the deadline for installing DTROs and making them operational was set by a committee of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on January 16. The officials are preparing the tender documents and will float the tender by February 15.

“We have certain sites under consideration like Behrampur STP. One of the STPs can also be installed at Bandhwari. The process to finalise the site is still going on,” said an official privy to the matter.

According to the officials, out of a total of 36,000 KLD of legacy leachate, around 13,000 KLD is yet to be disposed of and the work will also be completed by March 31. The leachate was accommodated in seven ponds at Bandhwari. . The existing capacity to treat leachate is 550 KLD, which will be enhanced to 950 KLD after the two DTROs are made operational.
