Sculptor makes Swami Vivekananda sand idol

Dharwad: Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary was celebrated by making a sand sculpture in five hours here on Monday. At an event organised by Jan Jagruti Sangha at Doddanayakanakoppa, artist Manjunath Hiremath and his sons Kantesh and Vinayak sculpted a sand sculpture of Swami Vivekananda. Sangh president Basavaraj Koravar and Sumangala Koracar offered special pooja to the sculpture.

Mayor Iresh Anchatageri offered flowers to the portrait of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Nagaraj KIranagi, Basavanneppa Kamati, Anand Patil, Shivaji Pawar, Mahantesh Patil and others were present.

Shettar will get BJP ticket any number of times, says Mahesh Tenginkai

Hubballi: Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar is a top leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the party will give him a ticket to contest elections any number of times, said BJP state general secretary Mahesh Tenginkai. On Monday, he said Shettar was never sidelined by the party. He alleged that Congress has become a ‘Gangotri of corruption’, and added that the opposition party is making baseless allegations against BJP. He also urged Congress to produce documents for the allegations against BJP instead of making false claims. “Kempanna, president of contractors’ association in Bengaluru, is an agent of the Congress. He levelled false allegations against the government without any concrete documents,” he added.

Cotton growers demand MSP

Hubballi: Karnataka Kalasa-Banduri Raita Horata Samiti threatened to stage a protest in front of Indian Cotton Corporation here, if authorities fail to fix the minimum support price for cotton and open purchase centres. Samiti president Siddu Teji said on Monday that the government should fix MSP for tur and cotton and start purchase centres. “Farmers have been facing the same issue after harvesting. The government allocates several crores for purchasing produce, but does not fix MSP,” he alleged.

Temple Kalasarohana on January 30

Hubballi: Dharma Jana Jagruti ceremony and various programmes will be organised at Guru Charamoteshwar Mutt in Varur village near on January 30. Trust committee president Shekarayya Hiremath said on Monday that the temple Kalasarohana will be organised in a grand manner and hundreds of people from Varur and surrounding villages will participate. A procession of the idol of Guru Charamoteshwar will be taken out, he said. Jagadguru Veerasomeshwara Swamiji of Balehonnur, Union minister Pralhad Joshi, legislative council chairman Basavaraj Horatti and VRL chief Vijay Sankeshwar will be present, he added.

Girls get free entry at Rly Museum

Hubballi: South Western Railway is providing free entry to all girls, accompanied by a guardian/parent, to the Railway Museum on Gadag Road here on Tuesday. SWR has stated that the Union ministry of women and child development is observing ‘National Girl Child Day’ every year on January 24. “The main objective of this day is to work towards the empowerment of girls in our society and eradicating inequalities faced by them,” it added. Eatables are not allowed inside the premises.

Lions Club holds e-waste collection drive

Hubballi: Lions International is conducting an e-waste collection drive from January 13 to February 13. Zone chairperson Manjunath Hanamaraddi said on Monday that Lions Club will also create awareness among people and students about the hazardous effects of e-waste. The Clubs have started e-waste collection centers at Desai Chambers near Nehru Stadium, Lions School, Vijay Nagar, Koliwad Marbles and Granites, Vidya Nagar and Shine Pavers, Gokul Road Industrial Estate 1st Gate. “People can handover their defunct smartphones, cell phones, televisions, media players, computers, laptops, calculators, gadgets, remote controls, refrigerators etc at these designated places so that they can be disposed off in a scientific method,” he added.
