Converting Eng-medium schools into Hindi against interests of poor: Gehlot

Jaipur: Former CM Ashok Gehlot on Saturday termed as “absurd” and “against the interests of the poor and middle class” the decision by Bhajan Lal Sharma govt to convert English-medium schools into Hindi-medium ones.

“If there was a need for improvement in these schools, then the present government should have made necessary improvements.

Converting English-medium schools to Hindi-medium seems absurd and is against the interests of the poor and middle class,” Gehlot posted on X.

He further said that while Hindi was the mother tongue of all, English-medium education provided new employment opportunities to children.

An official in the chief minister’s office told TOI on Saturday, “The govt does not intend to close English-medium schools but plans to close those with low enrollment. Schools with good enrollment will remain open. This is a routine exercise aimed at optimizing the use of govt resources.”

The previous Gehlot-led govt in the state had started converting Hindi-medium schools into English-medium ones. Initially, one such school was started in every district, and when it received positive response, such schools were opened at all block levels. Currently, the state has over 2,000 such schools. However, the initiative faced issues such as shortage of teachers and textbooks. Although the Gehlot government had begun assigning teachers proficient in English to these schools and had promised to allocate a separate cadre of 10,000 teachers for them, this plan never materialised.

“After assuming power in December 2023, the state govt reviewed these schools and found that many had high dropout rates. The reason was the lack of teachers proficient in English and the unavailability of books in English for many subjects,” a source revealed.

Education minister Madan Dilawar recently said that the govt would review the English-medium schools. “Only after the review will it be decided to close the schools,” Dilawar had said.
