Jaipur: Qualifier Purva Barve won her maiden international women’s singles title by emerging triumphant at the Slovak Open Future Series Badminton tournament which ended in Bratislava, Slovakia on Sunday.

The five-day tourney was organised by Slovak Badminton Federation under the auspices of Badminton World Federation (BWF).

World No. 416 Purva stunned top seed Agnes Korosi of Hungary 22-20, 21-16 in a well-contested final.

Pune girl Purva displayed excellent all-round performance to topple world No. 92 to clinch her first women’s singles crown after dominating the junior circuit between 2016 and 2019.

After bagging the opener, Purva grew in confidence and performed better as the match progressed to seal Agnes’ fate in straight games.

Earlier in the semis, Purva ousted another qualifier Edith Urell of Sweden 21-14, 21-14 in 33 minutes.

Former Indian team member, Purva had shocked eighth seed and world No. 155 Miranda Wilson of Germany 21-5, 21-10 in the second round.

“Purva has been with us from Day One of the Academy, and it gives me great pleasure to see how she has grown as a player over the years. Even though this is her first Senior International Title, I’m sure there are more to come. This win will give her the confidence to do better and better,” said Purva’s coach Nikhil Kanetkar, who represented India at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
