Finally, SAD fields Ranjit Singh Dhillon from Ludh

Ludhiana: After a long wait and hectic parleys, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) finally announced Ranjit Singh Dhillon as its candidate from Ludhiana. With this, the party is targeting Sikh votes in the constituency. Besides being backed by most senior leaders, Dhillon is popular among people from all communities.

He started his career as councillor from ward number 6 in 1997 and since then, he has maintained a clean image by steering clear of controversy.

He shot to prominence when he served as MLA from East constituency from 2012 till 2017 but was defeated by the Congress’s Sanjay Talwar in the 2017 assembly elections. In 2022, he lost the seat to AAP candidate Daljit Grewal. For some time, he served as district president of SAD (Urban). His wife was a councillor on the SAD ticket in 2012.

Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) funds were utilised for development works in areas falling under the East constituency for the first time during Dhillon's tenure. Later, both Congress and AAP MLAs continued the practice. Dhillon became the frontrunner in the race for tickets after SAD MLA Manpreet Ayali declined to contest. Initially, Dhillon was also reluctant to contest the elections, forcing the party to depend on its second-rung leadership, with names like former mayor Haracharan Singh Gohalwaria and advocate Paropkar Singh Ghumman doing the rounds. Sources said that Manpreet Ayali convinced Dhillon to contest and assured him all possible help in campaigning. When his name was announced on Monday, Dhillon went to pay obeisance at a gurdwara in Sekhewal as his supporters gathered at his Noorwala Road office to celebrate. On being contacted, Dhillon said, “I know I have received love from people of all age groups and now when Akali Dal will contest the election against heavyweight candidates, people will also fight for us.”

 Discussing his defeat in the previous two elections, he said, “I know the situation was not favourable for me then but now things have changed and I will try my level best to register victory.”
