Industrialists take part in plantation drive

Ludhiana: On Thursday, city industrialists joined the plantation drive launched by Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal and initiated plantation of around 500 saplings along Buddha Nullah.

Some of the plants, brought from Rajasthan, were planted near the 225MLD sewage treatment plant in Jamalpur on Thursday. The height of these plants is around 8 to 10 feet.

Seechewal was also present on the occasion. The plantation drive alongside Buddha Dariya was launched on Feb 2. Under this drive, first a cleanliness drive was carried out and now saplings are being planted. The major aim of the drive is to make Buddha Dariya pollution free.

Seechewal appreciated the efforts carried out by the industrialists to enhance green cover around Buddha Dariya. He appealed to all NGOs of the city to come forward and become a part of this plantation drive. He said it would be great if Buddha Dariya was made pollution free and all related issues got resolved. He said already 200 cusecs of fresh water is being released into the drain and TDS levels are also between 178 to 180. He said it will take time to clean the drain completely but they will have to continue their efforts.

Expressing concern about environmental degradation and depletion of ground water level, Seechewal said by the year 2050, 30 cities will be under water crisis and Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar are also included in this list. He said there is a need to plant as many trees as possible to prevent this crisis.
