Man stabbed to death at Alwarpuram

Madurai: A man was stabbed to death allegedly over a feud early on Tuesday at Alwarpuram, near the Vaigai where Lord Kallazhagar’s procession was heavily guarded by police.

The victim, Sonai, from Alwarpuram, was with his friend M Karthik around 1:30 am when an argument with A Sathish, also from the area, escalated.

Sathish allegedly stabbed both Karthik and Sonai before fleeing. Sonai succumbed to his injuries at Government Rajaji Hospital, while Karthik remains hospitalized. Mathichiyam police arrested Sathish, who reportedly had a dispute with Karthik over an alleged illicit relationship with Karthik’s wife.

In another incident, a clash among youths, including one wielding a machete, was captured on camera during Lord Kallazhagar’s ceremony.

Madurai police commissioner J Loganathan, assured the fest’s smooth conduct, with 4,000 police personnel deployed for security, including drone surveillance. Sixty teams, comprising 400 officers, were deployed to take preventive action against anti-social elements. “During the Chithirai festival, as many as 82 suspicious people were questioned and 26 weapons such as knives or swords were seized from them. Cases were also registered against 69 people, and they were all arrested,” said Loganathan.
