Thieves develop cold feet, return cows

MADURAI: Were they good-hearted or did they develop cold feet? Only the thieves who stole Pattu Raj’s cows would know as they informed him four days later on a handwritten note where he could claim his cattle. The interesting turn of events happened at Puthukulam in Sathankulam, Tuticorin.

On Sunday night, thieves made off with two of Pattu Raj’s five milch cows from the farm at Puthukulam junction.

He discovered it in the morning and was heartbroken as he earned a living by selling milk from the cattle. Pattu Raj filed a complaint with Sathankulam police and began searching for the cows on his own. He checked CCTV footage wherever available on the route by visiting shops and establishments. He also went to cattle markets in the locality with photographs of the cows and appealed to traders to alert him if they found the animals.

He had almost given up when he saw a note tied to his farm’s gate on Thursday morning. To his surprise, it said his two cows have been tied to a tamarind tree at Sankarankudiyiruppu, 7 kilometre away. It also left landmarks like ‘east of Ittamozhi’. Pattu Raj dashed off to the location and found the animals. Police said the thieves should be people from the area who had got wind of Pattu Raj’s frantic efforts to retrieve his cows. “They must have panicked and decided to get rid of the animals to avoid further trouble,” a constable said. Sathankulam police are investigating.
