Food poisoning: Lab report shows no contamination

Mangaluru: The laboratory reports of the samples collected from the ice cream factory in Adyar showed no contamination, according to officials. In the second week of April, many had fallen sick after they allegedly consumed the tender coconut water from the ice cream unit that sells the product. The number of persons reported sick due to suspected food poisoning reached 141 as of April 16.

The health department was planning to initiate legal action against the ice cream factory, if lab reports confirmed that the tender coconut water was unsafe for drinking. However, the lab report on the samples sent after the alleged food poisoning incident showed no trace of contamination, said DHO Dr HR Thimmaiah.

“As per the lab report, the tender coconut samples collected from the factory were safe to drink. The actual cause of health issues found among people, who consumed tender coconut juice from the factory could not be ascertained yet. The health department received the information two days after the incident. People suffered health issues after consuming the tender coconut juice on April 8 and fell ill over the next few days. The samples were collected from the factory on April 10. A more precise lab report would have been received if the samples had been collected on the same day. Due to the delay in receiving the information, samples could not be collected on the same day,” the DHO said.

“We have permitted the factory to process pulp for the ice cream. Their pulping unit has been opened,” he added.
