Gold worth ₹54.3L seized in MIA

Mangaluru/ Udupi: Customs sleuths at Mangaluru International Airport have seized gold of 24-carat purity weighing 750g (net), valued at Rs 54.3 lakh, from a passenger arriving from Dammam. Officials said that upon on-spot profiling and noticing suspicious movement, officers intercepted a passenger arriving from Dammam by Air India Express flight IX 886 on Saturday.

Upon interrogation, the passenger, hailing from Dakshina Kannada, was found to have concealed three oval-shaped objects containing gold in paste form weighing 825g (gross) in his rectum. Upon extraction, gold of 24-carat purity weighing 750g (net), valued at Rs 54.3 lakh, was recovered and seized. The passenger was arrested and produced before a magistrate.

Fisherman dies

A fisherman died after accidentally falling from the boat while fishing on Saturday. The deceased is Narayana, 40. According to police, the incident occurred when the fisherman slipped, while allegedly pulling the fishing net. An unnatural death report has been filed at Malpe police station.

1 killed in accident

One person died and five others sustained injuries after the SUV they were travelling in turned turtle and fell into a drain at Guddeyangadi on Bidkalkatte-Hunsemakki road in Kota police station limits on Saturday. The deceased is Keerthi, 25. The passengers were rushed to NR Acharya Hospital in Koteshwar. Chethan, Vignesh, Aishwarya, and Keerthana sustained injuries. The car driver also sustained minor injuries. A case has been registered.

Pedestrian killed

In another tragic accident, a pedestrian lost his life, while waiting to cross NH-66 near the divider on Saturday night. The deceased is Sanjeeva B, 58. The incident happened at Tenka Yermal Village in Kaup taluk. According to police, two-wheeler rider Poornaprajna hit the pedestrian allegedly due to negligent riding, causing both individuals to fall to the ground. Sanjeeva sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. A case has been filed under IPC Sections 279, 337, and 304 (a).

Autorickshaw driver killed

An autorickshaw driver died in a collision between a KSRTC bus and an autorickshaw in Puttur on Saturday. The deceased is Jason Tellis Mallar. According to the police, the accident took place when the KSRTC bus, arriving from Madikeri to Puttur, was allegedly hit by an autorickshaw at Kemmadi in Aryapu. The autorickshaw was completely mangled from the front side and the driver died on the spot. The complainant, who is the driver of the bus, was alone as he was returning from election duty. He alleged that the autorickshaw driver was responsible for the accident. A case has been registered at Puttur Rural police station.
