UPA regime was 85% corrupt: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai

MANGALURU: Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai lashing out at the Congress over the 40% commission allegations being levelled against the BJP, termed the previous administration of the UPA at the Centre, as an 85% government.

Quoting former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Bommai said that during the UPA government’s tenure, when the central government released one rupee, only 15 paise reached beneficiaries, and 85% of the funds sanctioned went to middlemen.
The CM was speaking at a convention of various government scheme beneficiaries, held here on Thursday.

Referring to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Bommai said that as many as 53,43,000 farmers in Karnataka benefited through the scheme introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“People are not aware of these achievements of the BJP government, because the Prime Minister has not introduced the scheme for publicity. Had the scheme been introduced by the UPA government, they would have erected hoardings to gain political mileage. Were scheme benefits actually reaching beneficiaries during UPA government’s tenure?” Bommai questioned.

Narendra Modi wanted to change this 85% system prevailing in India, the CM said. “The Prime Minister introduced the direct benefit transfer (DBT) technology, so that the benefits of government schemes will reach the right beneficiary, without the intervention of middlemen. The double-engine government led by Narendra Modi has ensured that there are no middlemen in the offices of deputy commissioners and in other government offices,” Bommai said.

“The very existence of governments depends on the standard of living of people. Only if the government is responsible towards the welfare of society, will people support it. A democracy based on caste and religion will not sustain for long, because the basic needs of every man is food, shelter, clothing, and freedom,” he said adding that the BJP governments led by Narendra Modi at the Centre and the state government implement policies based on this rationale,’’ he added.
