PM Narendra Modi consoles Mohammed Shami in dressing room after World Cup final loss

NEW DELHI: Pacer Mohammed Shami had a dream run in World Cup as he finished as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament but it was not enough as India were unable to cross the final hurdle and lost to Australia in the summit clash on Sunday.

After an incredible run in the tournament with 10 straight wins, India suffered their one and only loss in the competition in the final.

However, along with a billion of proud Indians, PM Narendra Modi also hailed the team for their stupendous performance.

After the final loss, PM Modi visited the Indian dressing room to lift the spirits of the disheartened players.

The Prime Minister was also seen hugging speedster Shami amid a wild sea of emotions in the dressing room.

Sharing an image of himself with the PM, Shami said that the team will bounce back from this loss.

Shami ended up with 24 wickets in 7 matches that included three fifers -- a couple against New Zealand and one against Sri Lanka.

In a video of PM Modi visiting the team in their dressing room, the Prime Minister could be seen greeting and motivating the players and head coach Rahul Dravid, saying "it happens" in sport and urging the players to be each other's strength in this hour.

PM Modi had also posted a message for the Indian team on social media.
