'Fun side apart, social media is depression trigger in youth'

Nagpur: Actor Sandhya Mridul, known for her powerful performances and expressing strong views on social media said, “Social media, while seemingly a fun way to connect, can be a major reason for depression, especially for the younger generation.”

She was speaking at a session titled ‘Belief, Change, Courage, and Versatility,’ at the Orange City Literature Festival (OCLF)’s knowledge series event, organized by GH Raisoni College of Engineering (GHRCE), primarily for young students and teachers.on Saturday.

“Social media can cause depression very fast,” Mridul warned.

“You see the achievements and enjoyment of others and start comparing your life. Limit your social media use. Shut it down at least two hours before sleep, and don’t check it first thing in the morning,” she urged.

Mridul, a champion for mental well-being, offered healthy alternatives. “I practice yoga, pranayama & vipashayana, even before they were trendy,” she said.

“These practices give big benefits. Acknowledge your feelings, don’t deny them. Use them positively,” she said, recalling an incident from her recent OTT appearance as Queen Jodha.

“I was suffering from a huge personal loss when shooting for this series started. I had to go and work. I used the feeling of grief to portray my character which became a successful idea,” she said.

Mridul also challenged the idea of crying as a sign of weakness, particularly for men. “Crying is a therapy. It gives you a new hope and energy to move on from negativity,” she claimed.

Her advice wasn’t just about mental well-being and embracing change and overcoming fear.

“Redefine failure,” she urged the young audience. “It’s not a full stop, but a call for change. Try something different! Failure is not the end,” she said.

Sharing a personal anecdote, Mridul revealed, “I had a happy corporate life, but quit my high-paying job to pursue acting. It was scary, but you cannot be brave if you are not scared.”

The session was a resounding success, with the audience leaving feeling inspired and empowered. It was a collaborative effort by the OCLF and the GH Raisoni College of Engineering (GHRCE). The programme was compered by Manish Nair, who also delivered the vote of thanks. Niharika Chugh moderated the session.
