'Super 50' first batch excels in JEE Mains

Nashik: As many as 22 out of 50 students, part of Nashik Zilla Parishad’s ‘Super 50’ programme, have cleared the JEE Mains. The results were declared on Thursday.

Nashik ZP CEO Ashima Mittal had taken the initiative in 2022 to train 50 students — children of workers and marginal farmers — from only ZP schools to facilitate free coaching to clear the exams.

They also provided lodging, boarding, coaching, schooling and other expenses through innovative funds. It cost the authorities about Rs 1.5 lakh per student for a two-year period.

From the scheduled class, Vrushali Waghmare from Manmad town in Nandgaon district, stood first. Her father, a worker, wanted Vrushali to follow her sister and take up a nursing course.

However, Vrushali’s class teacher told her about ‘Super 50’ and she clinched the opportunity.

This led her to take up engineering. “I wouldn’t have ever dreamt of engineering. I will definitely give my best to clear JEE Advance so that I get an entry into IIT,” said Waghmare.

Waghmare wants to be a role model for the members of her community.

From the scheduled tribes, Dimpal Bagul from Baglan taluka stood first.

She had initially decided to pursue her career in the sciences.

“Now that I have qualified for Mains, I think the sky is the limit. I would not want to get carried away. Hence, I have already started to study for several hours and take up various practice question paper sets to sharpen my knowledge,” she said.

Both students acknowledged the Nashik ZP’s role in the process.

Nashik ZP CEO Ashima Mittal said, “The results have left us spell bound. The students were capable of the achievements as they were selected from more than 4,000 students in ZP schools only. We just facilitated them.”

“Being an IIT-ian, I feel education is a game changer. If the students are able to go to an IIT, their aspirations will undergo a huge change. This is the reason I thought of taking up such programme for the students,” said Mittal.
