Six get life term for SP worker's murder in 2019

Noida: An additional sessions court on Monday handed the life term to six persons for the murder of a Samajwadi Party functionary on May 31, 2019.

Ramtek Katariya, the then SP president in Dadri, was shot near his house. The attackers, police said, were distant relatives of the victim and nursed a grudge against him over a previous murder.

Ramtek’s brother Praveen, who lodged a complaint at Dadri police station, said some of his relatives arrived in a Maruti Alto and pumped bullets into the SP functionary, who was monitoring the construction of his house.

“My brother slumped to the ground and blood started oozing from his wounds. I rushed there after hearing gunshots and saw the attackers fleeing in the car,” he said in his complaint. Ramtek was taken to a private hospital in Ghaziabad, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Following Praveen’s complaint, an FIR was registered against six persons — Baleshwar Katariya, his nephews Kapil and Annu, and three other relatives, Krishna, Chandrapal, and Nitesh.

The six were arrested and two guns and some bullets were recovered from them. They were remanded in judicial custody.

Nitin Tyagi and Bhag Singh Bhati, additional district counsels, presented Ramtek’s family members, cops and doctors as witnesses during the course of hearing.

Praveen told the court the six had a grudge against Ramtek and his family. “On January 6, 2019, Baleshwar’s brother was found dead on the railway tracks in Aligarh. Baleshwar blamed Ramtek for the murder and even lodged a complaint against him. However, police could not find any evidence against Ramtek and closed the case,” he said.

Chaudhury Hariraj Singh, the lawyer representing the six arrested persons, said his clients should be acquitted because there wasn’t enough evidence against them. Additional district sessions judge Rajvijay Pratap Singh relied on the testimonies of witnesses and convicted the six persons on Monday.
