Construction of Nemom coaching terminal begins

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After years of waiting, the first phase of work on the proposed coaching terminal at Nemom railway station has commenced. After the railway board had approved the project, the Southern Railways had in March given the contract to Aluva-based company Rail Tech. The period of completion of the project which is worth Rs 79 crore is 24 months.

“The work related to the project has begun. The initial proceedings, including the land acquisition, are also nearing completion,” said a railway spokesperson.

The proposed project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art building, four platforms, and underpasses. Subways, four stabling lines, water tanks, two pit lines, and a repair shed are also part of the project.

An approach road will also be constructed from the state highway from Pravachambalam to the railway station.

Earlier, the terminal work for the Kochuveli railway station was completed. The station has six platforms, of which the maintenance work on two platforms has been completed. Recently, the state govt has given approval to rename Nemom railway station as Thiruvananthapuram South Railway Station and Kochuveli station as Thiruvananthapuram North Railway Station. However, a final approval from the Centre is still pending.

The coaching terminal, along with the stabling lines are proposed on a 12.14-hectare land owned by the railways at Nemom. The stabling lines can be used to shift the parked trains from the station at Thampanoor and use them for operations.

The coaching terminal had been mooted considering the lack of platforms to handle the trains at central station and the satellite terminal at Kochuveli.

The masterplan for the project was prepared and submitted to the railways in 2018.

The railway board has sanctioned a new coaching terminal at Nemom to decongest Thiruvananthapuram central railway station. In phase two, three stabling lines and four pit lines, a sick line, and a power car shed will be constructed.
