Man electrocuted by fence for wild animals

Thiruvananthapuram: A man was killed after coming into contact with an electric fence which was set up to drive away wild animals at Venjaramoodu in the wee hours of Sunday.

The deceased has been identified by police as Arun, 36 of Chakkakadu near Nedumangad.

Police said Arun and his two friends went fishing at night, and the accident happened while he was on his way back home.

Arun was unaware of the live wire on the fence that was set to drive wild animals away. “The path to the deceased’s house is very narrow and Arun used to park his vehicle some meters away from his house on a small ground. While parking, the vehicle came into contact with the electric fence and he got electrocuted,” said police.

He remained there unattended till morning and was seen lying there unconscious by people in the locality. They soon alerted the police. He was rushed to Kanyakulangara community health centre, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Venjaramoodu police registered a case over the incident under section 174 of CrPC for unnatural death.

“It is certain that the death was due to electrocution. But we need to get the postmortem report to confirm it officially. Using electric fence to drive away wild animals is illegal and the person, who set it, will be booked under section 304 of IPC for causing death by negligence as soon as we get the report,” said police.

The deceased was a carpenter by profession and is survived by his wife and two children.
