Introduce solid waste mgmt around Kashi airport: DC

Varanasi: In view of keeping the airspace safe, divisional commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma, has directed the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) and other agencies concerned to introduce solid waste management around the Lal Bahadur Shastri International airport.

The commissioner was holding a meeting of the aviation area environment management committee on Thursday.

He asked the officials to find out a permanent solution of the dumping of garbage inside airport limits by the people dwelling in villages on the northern side of runway as well as banning meat shops.

Sharma directed block development officer of Pindra to run a continuous awareness campaign by deputing sufficient numbers of sanitation workers at the identified sites and also conduct a campaign to remove all the garbage. He also directed the officials to keep an adequate number of dustbins and make provisions for conducting a survey of the area.

He said the ‘dhabas’ and restaurants that spread filth should be identified to serve notices and impose fines.

The commissioner also asked the vice-chairman of the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA), Pulkit Garg, to issue notices regarding mandatory NOC from the airport authority for all the construction taking place within a 20km perimeter of the airport. He directed the DFO to engage a team to catch the wild animals around the airport. He directed the officials of all concerned departments to ensure compliance with the instructions in the next one week and submit reports by May 4. The officials including the airport director, Puneet Gupta, VDA VC, Pulkit Garg, and others attended the meeting through video conferencing.
