Martyrs' Day: Tributes paid to Mahatma Gandhi

Varanasi: A series of programmes was organised by several organisations to observe the Martyrs’ Day on Monday. The local Congressmen, led by former MLA Ajay Rai, paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary on Monday. The city unit of Congress organised a programme in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Town Hall and unfurled the flag to mark the conclusion of Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Speaking on the occasion, Rai said, “Following the path of truth and non-violence shown by Gandhiji, Rahul Gandhi led the Bharat Jodi Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.”

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party, he said that the BJP has sown seeds of hatred among people due to which there is a fearful atmosphere in the state. “Now, people are connecting to the yatra to share their suffering as they trust Congress for the country’s betterment.”

The programme was attended by Rajeshwar Singh Patel, Durga Prasad Gupta and Sanjeev Singh among many others.

Manavdhikar Jananigrani Samiti, Janmitra Nyas and Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Panchayat, in association with the United Nation Voluntary Fund for Torture Victims (UNVFVT), distributed sewing machines among women to make them self-reliant. Lenin Raghuvanshi, founder of Manavdhikar Jananigrani Samiti, welcomed the guests by offering them plants and khadi scarfs.

A Gandhi Sandesh poster exhibition was also held at Laxmi Shankar Inter College in Rajwari village under the aegis of Asha Trust. Apart from this, a GK competition based on constitution-related questions was also organised in which about 300 students took part.
