'Publish details of pending cases as per SC guidelines'

Vijayawada: The Supreme Court’s guidelines regarding publishing details of pending criminal cases should be complied by candidates contesting the elections, the high court said on Wednesday, adding that candidates should publish details of their pending criminal cases in newspapers thrice before polling day and also put the same on their respective party websites.

One Dr Samala Ramesh Babu filed a PIL seeking directions to publish the details of criminal cases of candidates in vernacular language also along with English.

Arguing on behalf of the petitioner, Karumanchi Indraneel Babu said 80% of the electorate cannot understand English. To enable voters to take an informed decision on who to vote, criminal cases should be published in Telugu language also, he stated, and submitted the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court mandating candidates to publish details of cases thrice in newspapers.

The HC bench comprising Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice R Raghunandan Rao said the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the contesting candidates must comply with the guidelines of the apex court.

Arguing on behalf of ECI, senior counsel Avinash Desai sought time to submit details whether any candidates voluntarily published details of pending cases. Considering the submissions, the high court posted the matter for further hearing after one week.
