Happy Onam 2020: Images, Quotes, Wishes, Messages, Cards, Greetings, Pictures and GIFs

Onam is one of the most celebrated festivals amongst the Malayalis in and outside Kerala. The annual harvest festival is a 10 day celebration which according to the Gregorian calendar occurs in the month of August and September. This year, it began on the 22nd of August and will end on August 31.

The festival is celebrated to mark the homecoming of the grandson of Prahlada, King Mahabali.

According to legends, King Mahabali, also known as Bali, was a great Asura Emperor. Due to Bali's rising popularity amongst the people, the followers of the Hindu God Vishnu weren't happy. That's when Vishnu changed his form to Vamana and became a dwarf. As Vamana, asked Mahabali for some land which he could cover in three strides. When Mahabali agreed to the dwarf's request, Vamana transformed himself into a magnificent giant. In the first step, he covered the Earth and with the second he covered the Heaven. For no other place left to cover for the third stride, Mahabali offered his head to Vamana and the latter pushed Mahabali in the underworld. That's when Mahabali requested Vamana if he could visit Thiruvonam once a year to pay a visit to his beloved people. Vamana or Lord Vishnu granted Mahabali's wish and since then Onam is celebrated with great enthusiasm amongst people living in Kerala.

Some of the main celebrations during Onam are Vallam Kali (boat races), Pookkalam (flower Rangoli), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Pulikali (tiger dances), Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathappan (worship), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes) and Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance). During this time, people wear new dresses, decorate their houses and prepare the traditional meal, which is known as sadhya.

Although, this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is difficult to celebrate the festival on a wide scale, you can always send your loved ones, family and friends, beautiful greeting card images and send them these wonderful quotes to wish them on this auspicious occasion of
Onam.
