A melange of qawwali, shayari & Telangana weaves marked this unique fashion show

It was a vibrant evening filled with music, poetry, culture, food, and of course, some exquisite handloom weaves as the who’s who of the city came together to mark National Handlooms Day on Sunday. Organised by the Department of Handlooms and Textiles, the government of Telangana and the Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (TSCO), the highlight of ‘Amogham’ was a unique fashion show that featured a blend of heritage handloom weaves and conversations around the art of weaving.

The evening began with guests gorging on some Telangana delicacies before settling down for the ramp show with a twist. There was no ramp, after all. The 26 models walked among the guests, allowing them to see the garments up close, and admire the micro details, such as the unique banjara embroidery from Ibrahimpatnam.

The collection featured over 50 garments — sarees, kurtas, and ghararas in vibrant Telangana weaves. From ikkats of Pochampally and Puttapaka, to elegant Gadwal silks and lustrous Narayanpet weaves, there was plenty to admire.

The showstopper, Hyderabad’s very own Tabu , stunned in a traditional gharara. Adding to the beauty of the whole show was a live rendition of poems recited by Iqbal Patni set to soothing strains of a violin. While the poems were an ode to the beauty of Telangana women, the enchanting instrumental music by saxophonist Anil Kumar and soulful qawwalis by Rajab Ali and group created a blissful mahaul.
