Basant Panchami, also spelled as Vasant Panchami is the festival that marks the beginning of the spring season. It is celebrated by different people in different ways depending upon on their culture and religion. This year the auspicious occasion will be observed on February 10.
The goddess of knowledge and wisdom Lordess Saraswati is also worshiped on this day by many. Thus, this day is called Saraswati puja. The festival is most popular in Northern states of India including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan. It is also celebrated by the people of Odisha and Bengal.
The day is celebrated by worshipping goddess Saraswati at home and in temples. The puja is also celebrated in many schools. Many devotees also take holy bath at the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
All people dress up in vibrant yellow colour because the mustard seeds in the northern parts of India bloom during the season, giving the nature a yellow coat. Yellow flowers are offered to Goddess Saraswati and yellow sweets are offered for the Prasad.
People also fly kites, offer prayers, distribute sweets and music events happen at many places.
