Mecca is a city in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia . At this birthplace of Muhammad, a cave about 3 km from Mecca, was the site where Muhammad first reveled the Quran . Mecca and a pilgrimage to it, known as the Hajj , is obligatory for all able Muslims to bow down in reverence. Mecca is home to the Kaaba , one of Islam's holiest sites and the direction of Muslim prayer, and thus Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in Islam.

The pilgrimage to Mecca attracts millions of Muslims from all over the world. There are two pilgrimages: the Hajj and the Umrah. The Hajj, the 'greater' pilgrimage is performed annually in Mecca and nearby sites.
