Ekadashi in English means the 11th date of the month. It is the eleventh lunar day of each of the two lunar phases according to the Hindu calendar . Each of the two Ekadashis are marked in the Sukla Paksha and the Krishna Paksha. These days are considered auspicious in Hinduism and Jainism. Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a fast on these days to seek his blessings.
The reason behind being that in the Bhagavata Purana (sk. IX, adhy. 4) Ekadasī was observed by Ambarisha, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. This year, Krishna Paksha Ekadashi will be observed on April 30, 2019, which is based on the position of the moon. The important timings for it are: Beginning at - 10:04 PM, April 29 Ends at - 12:18 AM, May 01 The Ekadashi fast ideally spans for three days-- a day before Ekadashi, devotees only have a single meal in the afternoon to ensure that there is no residual food in the stomach the next day. On the day of Ekadashi, devotees keep a strict fast, avoiding all grains and cereals, and break their fast only on the next day. People can choose whether they want to observe fast without any food and water, have only water, or have some fruits as well during the day. Though such strict fasting shouldn't be observed by people who have health issues or women who are pregnant.
