Happy Holi 2021: History
Every Indian festival has its origin in a legend or an epic. Holi is no different. In the seventh canto of Bhagavad Purana or Shrimad Bhagavatam, there is an ancient legend that associates itself with the celebrations of Holi. According to the legend, there was an evil king named, Hiranyakashyap, who considered himself as god and demanded everyone’s devotion towards him. However, his own son Prahlad worshipped Lord Vishnu, which mad the evil king furious. Hiranyakashyap made many attempts to murder his son but was saved by the divine help of lord Vishnu. Finally, he asks his sister, Holika, who could not be harmed by fire, to take Prahlad into the bed of fire. Fortunately, Prahlad is saved by Lord Vishnu and Holika perishes and is punished for her act.
Holi is also associated with the legend of Lord Krishna, who during his childhood had drank the poisonous milk of Putana, which lead to his blue skin. The exchange of colors originated from the colorful pranks played between Lord Krishna and his gopis.
Another legend associated with Holi involves Lord Shiva, Kamadeva and Rati. Kamadeva, the god of love, is burnt to ashes when under the instructions of Goddess Parvati, he shoots the arrow of love at Lord Shiva, who was under deep meditation. Saddened by the loss of her husband, Rati, the wife of Kamadeva, performs an extreme meditation for forty days, that pacifies Lord Shiva and he brings Kamadeva back to life. The return of Kamadeva is celebrated on the fortieth day after Vasant Panchami i.e. Holi.
Happy Holi 2021: Significance and Importance
Apart from its mythological significance, Holi also has a cultural and a social significance. As all the legends symbolize the victory of good over evil and the power of truth. Holi is also celebrated during the time of full bloom and good harvest. This gives people the reason to rejoice and celebrate the occasion even more.
Holi also signifies the strength of our nation’s secular fabric, where Holi, although a Hindu festival, is celebrated by non-Hindus too. The festival is beyond religion, gender, race, caste, class, creed and nationality. Gifts, sweets and greetings are exchanged between friends and family.
On this auspicious day, wishing everyone a joyful, colorful and fun Holi.
