Onam is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated by Malayalis across the world. The annual harvest festival marks the start of the Malayali calendar. According to legends, Onam is celebrated to mark and honour the homecoming of the grandson of Prahlada, King Mahabali. People celebrate Onam with great enthusiasm each year.

They also participate in fun activities during Onam like Vallam Kali (boat races), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Pookkalam (flower arrangement), Pulikali (tiger dances) to name a few.

The story behind this festival is that King Mahabali, also known as Bali, was a great Asura Emperor. Seeing Bali getting more popular among people, the followers of the Hindu God Vishnu weren't happy. That's when Vishnu changed his form to Vamana and became a dwarf. As Vamana, he then tricked Mahabali and asked him for some land which he could cover in three strides. When Mahabali agreed to the dwarf's request, Vamana changed himself into a huge giant. In the first step, he covered the Earth and with the second he covered the Heaven. For no other place left to cover for the third stride, Mahabali offered his head to Vamana and the latter pushed Mahabali in the underworld. That's when Mahabali requested Vamana if he could visit Thiruvonam once a year to pay a visit to his beloved people. Vamana aka Vishnu agreed to Mahabali's request and since then Onam is celebrated with great fervour, majorly by people living in Kerala.

This year the festival started on the 1st of September and it will go on till September 13. Though Onam is celebrated for 10-days, there are four main days of this festival which are celebrated on September 10, 11, 12 and 13 this year. The four main days of Onam are:
1. First Onam or Uthraadam marks King Mahabali's return to Kerala.
2. The second day or Thiruvonam is the most important day of this festival. King Mahabali is believed to return and visit people's homes in Kerala on this auspicious day.
3. The third day of Onam is called Avittam when people prepare for King Mahabali’s departure.
4. The fourth and final day is called Chathayam. It will be observed as Sri Narayana Guru Jayanthi. Even after the 10-day festival ends, it is noticed that the post-Onam festivities continue for a few days.
