According to the Hindu calendar, the festival is celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon.

The birth of Lord Krishna

According to mythological texts, Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev in a prison in Mathura at the stroke of midnight. To save him from the clutches of Kamsa, the cousin of Devaki, his father took him to Gokul by crossing the river overnight. There he was brought up by Yashoda and Nanda, his foster parents.

Celebration of Krishna Janmashtami 2019

Since Krishna was said to be born at the stroke of midnight, this festival is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm, where people decorate their temples, homes and even their localities. Right from the midnight, ardent devotees of Krishna sing, pray, dance and enact the life of Lord Krishna.

To celebrate this holy day, all or most Krishna temples across India as well as in many foreign locations are beautifully decorated, processions are arranged, bhajans and kirtans are organised and kids dress up as gods and goddesses, especially as Lord Krishna himself. Temples and even some domestic households organise recitation of holy books Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita.

It is believed that Lord Krishna loved eating curd, butter and milk. He would steal it from his home and also from other people living near to his house. That is why Krishna is also called as ’Makhan chor’, the one who steals the Makhan.
