Mother's Day Poems: Emotional Mother's Day Poems That Will Make Mom Laugh and Cry

The love of a mother is invaluable and there is no doubt about it. Whether it's feeding her child, looking after their daily needs, or sacrificing her life for their happiness - a mother does it all. To honor the mother of the family or the individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society, Mother's Day is observed every year.

It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May.

While some countries have a multi-century history of a day to celebrate mothers, the modern American version of the holiday began in the United States in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis, who organized the first Mother's Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which serves as the International Mother's Day Shrine today. It is not directly related to the many traditional celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have existed throughout the world for thousands of years, such as the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the other Christian ecclesiastical Mothering Sunday celebration. However, in some countries, Mother's Day is still synonymous with these older traditions.

This year, Mother's Day will be observed on Sunday, May 8. Thus, here's a look at some emotional Mother's Day poems that will make mom laugh and cry.

'My Mother' By Ann Taylor
Who sat and watched my infant head
When sleeping on my cradle bed,
And tears of sweet affection shed? My Mother.
When pain and sickness made me cry,
Who gazed upon my heavy eye,
And wept for fear that I should die? My Mother.
Who taught my infant lips to pray
And love God’s holy book and day,
And walk in wisdom’s pleasant way? My Mother.
And can I ever cease to be
Affectionate and kind to thee,
Who wast so very kind to me, My Mother?
Ah, no! the thought I cannot bear,
And if God please my life to spare
I hope I shall reward they care, My Mother.
When thou art feeble, old and grey,
My healthy arm shall be thy stay,
And I will soothe thy pains away, My Mother.

'Sonnet To My Mother' By George Barker
Most near, most dear, most loved, and most far,
Under the huge window where I often found her
Sitting as huge as Asia, seismic with laughter,
Gin and chicken helpless in her Irish hand,
Irresistible as Rabelais but most tender for
The lame dogs and hurt birds that surround her,—
She is a procession no one can follow after
But be like a little dog following a brass band.
She will not glance up at the bomber or condescend
To drop her gin and scuttle to a cellar,
But lean on the mahogany table like a mountain
Whom only faith can move, and so I send
O all her faith and all my love to tell her
That she will move from mourning into morning.

'Super Mom' by Joanna Fuchs
Mom, you're a wonderful mother,
So gentle, yet so strong.
The many ways you show you care
Always make me feel I belong.
You're patient when I'm foolish;
You give guidance when I ask;
It seems you can do most anything;
You're the master of every task.
You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're my cushion when I fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support me whenever I call.
I love you more than you know;
You have my total respect.
If I had my choice of mothers,
You'd be the one I'd select!

'Guiding Light Mom' by Karl and Joanna Fuchs
Mom, from the time I was really young,
I realized I had someone...you,
who always cared,
who always protected me,
who was always there for me no matter what.
You taught me right from wrong,
and pushed me to do the right thing,
even when it was hard to do.
You took care of me when I was sick,
and your love helped make me well.
You had rules,
and I learned that when I obeyed them,
my life was simpler, better, richer.
You were and are
the guiding light of my life.
My heart is filled with love for you,
my teacher, my friend, my mother.
